Mark your calendars for Saturday, February 25th if your are anywhere near Tulsa, OK and come out to watch me paint "live" at Lovetts Gallery from 10am - 5pm. It should be a fun and interesting day as I attempt to do this live painting thing for the first time! Hopefully the weather is great and this all can happen without a hitch. Oklahoma can be unpredictable in late winter.

I will also be bringing some new works with me, including a couple more of these 12x12'' pieces which stay in a constant state of "sold out" at Lovetts. This one called Capriole, means "a playful leap" and was one of the most spontaneous of this series. It also sold the quickest of all 12's as I painted it on Dec. 25 and it found a home January 11.

I look forward to smearing paint and meeting friends at Lovetts.

This 18x18'' is along the same lines as the 24'' posted last time and has a little more expressive texture and brighter colors. I like the raw, yet bright feel of this one and plan to keep exploring! Fun.

In this new piece, I'm trying to push a bit more contemporary feel into my work. I have still used the texture, loose palette knife strokes and linear work, but the composition is simplified. I'm happy with the direction and this could become an ongoing series with endless variations. I would like to hear what you think. Do you like this new look? I call it "organic architecture" or "urban rustic".

I'm doing a few more of these little 8x8'' palette knife studies that have been so popular in the past. I get into all of the large gallery work and sometimes forget how enjoyable these small works are.

I paint them "on the fly" and quickly, so they take on a personality all their own. This one is called "chimera" which means "dream or fantasy". I can get into a dreamlike state sometimes when delving into my art, so the title is appropriate!

I've been pretty busy in the studio and have some new work up on my website, including this new 36x48'' deep canvas. I went back to my loose grid style and really enjoyed where this painting took me in the end with the rich layers and warm tones.

I will post up some other work over the weekend as well.

I'm excited to announce my acceptance to the Oklahoma City Festival of the Arts this next April! I have applied three years to this great annual event and finally made the cut! The downtown festival runs six days each spring and brings in thousands of visitors. If you are in the OKC area, please come out and meet me at this event April 24-29, 2012.

Shake, Rattle, and Paint!

Well, you never know what to expect living in Oklahoma. We are known for tornadoes, but not earthquakes. We've had a few small ones, but this past few days have been crazy with a cluster of shakers in East central OK.

I was in the middle of this painting when we had the largest on record Sunday night measuring 5.6. Although we had only a small rumble here in Western OK, it shook things up pretty good near the center. I felt this piece resembled two plates colliding in the earth and just had to title it this way. It's pretty ironic that the piece fits the story line so well.

Oh, and we had tornadoes this week, as well as another 4.7 quake last night during the tornado storms! Is that a Quakenado?

A Natural Progression

Not every one of my paintings come out just the way I envision them. Once in a while the canvas seems to be cursed, or the paint... or something. I get to a point where I call it done, but then when it hangs around for some time, it jumps off the wall and gives me a head slap somewhat like the one the NCIS team (a TV show, not that I watch tv much)...uses to make a point.

The only thing left to do then, is burn it or paint over it. You don't want to give it away because if you don't like it, who else will? Well, someone will eventually.

Since I don't like to burn a good canvas and paint covers all, I choose to paint over.

This painting, appropriately titled "Chronicle" is the result of some re-working.

The new piece has a history of paint progression with at least three paint-over sessions. Each time, parts of the previous stages were spared in the process. It really took on a character of its own and seemed to push me in the direction it needed to go.

When you think something is going south, never give up. There might be a painting there somewhere waiting to happen!

Termico- Italian for thermal.

This latest piece is simple and complex at the same time. Simple in composition, but complex in textures and layering. It really looks better up close and personal.

I've started a new little book which will hopefully have about one hundred of my paintings in a collection when finished. These will be available to order directly from the printer at a reasonable cost. Several people have shown interest in these and it will be a great way for me to document the work as well as give collectors a selection of my best paintings all in one place. I have 75 pages complete and hope to send it to print soon, so watch for news about where you can get your copy. They will also make good gifts for the upcoming season if you have an art lover on the list!

That's inches, by the way, although I would like to paint an eight foot piece at some point.

After painting on this fun series and selling almost every one of them, I switched gears to focus on large gallery work this year. The little RayMar panels sat in the cabinet and while doing some cleaning in there this weekend, it came to me that I needed to pull these little squares out and slap some paint on again. They are great study pieces for larger work and also seem to get me in the groove for other projects. Think of it as a musician doing scales to warm up for performance or an athlete doing stretches.

My small works are also affordable for those with a lower art budget or limited wall space. Don't let your favorite one slip by. They don't last very long at $150. I even include a black contemporary frame and US shipping! Original art for about the cost of an iPhone for the month. What a deal!

Oh...and many people want to throw their phones out the window, including me!

Green. It's not one of my favorite colors to try and paint. Green intimidates me. I really don't know why. Oh, sure... I can squeeze some out of a tube and put it on with no problem, but when it comes to getting that perfect green in my head, Green just likes to play tricks on me. Well, over the past three days, I proceeded to kick Green's butt and slapped it upside the head with a palette knife loaded with purples and orange just for fun.

So there...take that, Green. I may just learn to like you after all.

The latest large painting has already left the building along with "Threshold" 36x36. Both are on their way to InArt Gallery Santa Fe where summer is in high gear and sales are happening! This one replaces another 36x60 sold to a new California collector last month. Santa Fe will really be crowded for the 90th Indian Market August 20-21, so I wanted to stock the gallery with new works.

I'm starting some new 30x30 and 24x24 pieces and will be exploring some new color schemes and techniques, so keep an eye out for new releases in this mid-size/price option.

OK Mozart Event

The art show at the recent OK Mozart Festival in Bartlesville, OK was well received by patrons and donors of the annual event with several of the eleven large pieces finding new homes. Lovetts Gallery in Tulsa curated the event and has the remaining works on sale in the gallery, including my large assemblage panel shown above in center. My wife, Carolyn has been having some major health issues, so things are a bit disruptive here and art has been squeezed in when I can find time. It has been good to escape to that creative space where I can to find some sense of quiet in this storm. I was able to paint pretty hard yesterday on a new 36x60'' and will have it finished in a couple of days.

Speaking of large canvas, I sold two nice pieces at InArt Gallery, Santa Fe to new California collectors. One went to San Jose and the other to Berkeley. It always feels great when paintings find homes!

Pushing boundaries with new techniques...

I've kicked off a series of work on panel, and I'm having quite a blast exploring some new techniques of applying and removing paint to get to the end result you see here. I'm creating a history of sorts, with many thin glaze layers applied and subsequently sanded in areas to take the paint back a bit and reveal some interesting forms and texture. This is totally different than my normal heavy textured palette knife painting on canvas and I really like the direction it has taken. I'm doing these without using a brush, dragging paint with different tools in thin translucent layers. They take a while to complete this way and I'm working out in my head a way to move to larger panels and still achieve the same results. I guess I will need bigger tools!

Santa Fe Road Trip

I'm a little behind on this blog since my Facebook page seems to be where I interact the most. I have also been busy painting new work for spring and over the weekend, I made the trek out to InArt Gallery in Santa Fe to deliver eleven new pieces. This will be my first "high season" in the second largest art market in the US and I wanted to be there when it kicks off!

The painting on the right (on the porch) is a new 36''x36'' piece called Beckoning Sky. The big open skies of New Mexico do seem to beckon me. I can't wait to return to the "Land of Enchantment"!

I'm in an experimental phase right now and I'm also into these unusual size rectangles. These skinny paintings are gaining popularity and work well in a small space where it's hard to find the right fit. I like the challenge of composition with these as well.

The title mirrors my views with art right now. Some people want to put limits on what you create, but I believe art is in a constant state of flux and should flow from within the artist. When you put a barrier in a stream, water will force it's way over or around one way or another. The flow can be challenged, slowed or checked, but the force behind it never ceases.

The first painting of 2011 has much to say and was painted quickly and intuitively. This one really came from inside. The black areas represent the closure or the fading out of the past and almost create a portal or doorway. What you see in the doorway is still unclear. Muted. Mysterious. Intriguing. There is light coming through, which tells me it's safe to venture beyond this door and keep moving ahead, discovering new things, touching lives, and casting aside fear and doubt.

This is not a black painting with color. It is color and light emerging through the dark.

May 2011 bring you all that you seek...and watch for open doors.

I just want to say that I sincerely thank all of you who have followed my art this past year. Yes, I know it's already January 5th. I'm lagging on blog posts a bit.

2010 was a roller coaster year. There were many exciting things, but some trials and uncertain moments. Life seems to have leveled out some, and I'm looking forward to what 2011 has in store. As an artist, I'm believing this year will bring improvement and innovation in my work and some new opportunities to share it with others. I joined two great new galleries last year, one in Santa Fe, NM and in Tulsa, OK, and as a relatively emerging artist, I enjoyed some pretty good sales in this economy. That, I am thankful for.

I hope everyone is having a super Thanksgiving with family and friends. This is always a great time of year. A cold front blew into Oklahoma last night and it went from 77 to 29 degrees here this morning. Brrrrr. Crisp Fall weather sure makes it feel like the holiday season.

I spent all day yesterday setting up the art booth for the NRHA Reining Horse Futurity Show in Oklahoma City the next ten days. Fellow OKC landscape artist, Thomas Stotts will be joining me for the show and we plan to paint "live'' during the week. Horse people from all over the globe will attend this annual event and I'm sure some of them love fine art. It should be an interesting few days.

The Oklahoma Arts Guild will also feature a display at the show with over 100 pieces of art by 100 artists from the state. An opening reception is planned at 5:30 December 2 with a live auction of select art following to benefit youth art endeavors.

I have been painting like crazy getting prepared for an upcoming show, which will put me in some unfamiliar surroundings. I will be setting up with another artist at the National Reining Horse Futurity Show in Oklahoma City the week after Thanksgiving.

This is a big and prestigious event with attendees from literally all over the globe. We'll be there to show them that Oklahomans are creative and hopefully sell some art. We will also be painting on-site throughout the show, which should be interesting. I sure hope there are some abstract art lovers in the crowd.

As this painting came together, I thought of the three rectangles as figures or soldiers and the row of small colored rectangles as figures on the horizon. The dominant red has a sense of power. I looked up the word vanguard and it just seemed to fit this piece.

This little painting looks much better in person because the metallic glow is not as visible in photos. I started this one with an Irradescent Peal undercoat mixed with the textured gel. I then painted with transparent glazes so the pearl would reflect through and it really gave it a jewel-like shimmer. I think a 48x48'' done this way would really be cool!

The last few days have been productive in the studio and three new works were finished last night. This is a favorite of those three and has a spontaneous vibe to it with a kind of Native feel and painted with emotion. More to follow...

I really like painting these little "abstract studies" as I call them and since there were only two left after almost thirty of them, I will be painting more. People seem to really enjoy them and I just sent one to a woman in New Jersey last week. She had printed the image of the painting which spoke to her and carried it around in her purse for some time before finally making the purchase. If you see one that you really love, don't wait around too long or you just might miss it. Someone else may be carrying "your" painting around right now!

I'm back from a beautiful Oklahoma fall weekend art event in the historic town of Guthrie, OK. It was great meeting new friends and artists as well as enjoying the cooler weather. Much welcomed after some triple digit temps here recently.

Thank you to the friendly and helpful staff of Guthrie Escape and for providing the "big tents" for us so we didn't have to set up our own. If you ever get a chance to visit this town, it will charm you with all of it's history and victorian buildings. Guthrie was actually the first Capitol of Oklahoma before it was moved to Oklahoma City. It is also famous for the many bed and breakfast inns it contains.

Back home after a weekend on the road to Wichita, KS Autumn & Art Festival. The weather turned out great except it was a little warm and humid for late September. The show had great volunteers and lots of perks for the artists. The setting was next to a lake in a beautiful upscale development and went well for a first year event. I think Wichita will make this show better and better in the future as word gets out.

Sales are starting to roll in from some of my galleries as well as locally and that always makes an artist happy! I have enjoyed some quick sales at InArt Santa Fe Gallery, which is exciting! After this last fall show, I'll be refocusing on some new works to replace gallery work as it sells. I am doing a select number of festivals to get out and meet art buyers and I do enjoy them when the weather cooperates, but they are a ton of work and travel. I am ready to spend some real quality painting time in the studio as weather cools down as well as getting out and just soaking in some Fall air. This is my favorite time of year.

This is a new 30x30'' called "Connections". The top photo is where I stopped the first time and called it finished. After it sat in the studio for a couple of days, it seemed to be taunting me to come back to it. Something just didn't feel right about it. Last night it seemed the turquoise glazing in the top center area was the part that bugged me, so I added the warmer glazes up top and then used some subtle blues on the left center area to balance things out.

I don't know if an art piece is ever actually "finished". I once heard someone say that an artist never finishes the work, but only abandons it. A guy I used to work with would say "stop tickling it to death!", meaning let it go before you overwork it. Pretty simple in theory, but sometimes hard to practice.

Paint! Paint and move along, please.

That blog title is Spanish for "go West", which is where my art career seems to be heading from here. West from Oklahoma to the art Mecca of Santa Fe, NM. Next week I'll be packing up my best and going to a great gallery there to discuss representation and hopefully a new home for my paintings. This is huge for me and I don't take this opportunity lightly. A door has been opened to a new horizon and I'm ready to cross the threshhold!

This painting I finished yesterday will make the trip and the title pretty much sums up the whole situation in those two words.

Go West or bust. Well, I doubt about the bust part, but I am on a mission!

Picasso and Sweet Potato Vine

An artist friend told me recently that I was very prolific. While I do paint freqently and maybe more than said artist friend, I don't come close to Picasso, who produced around 50,000 works in some form or another.

Sweet potato vine is also prolific. I shot the photo this morning in front of the studio and this whole prolific train of thought started. Maybe I'm inspired by this hardy green plant, which would probably grow one hundred feet if you let it. We went to the mountains for a week and it continued to grow all over in spite of the 105 degree temps and little water. You can hack it back and it grows more. You can cut a piece off and stick it in some dirt and it propagates itself. Don't dare put fertilizer on this stuff or it might grow legs and walk off.

As an artist, I kind of feel that like this vine, I just need a little gowing room and water to really flourish. I can take some setbacks or pruning and not let that stop my growth, but learn from each work produced and move on to the next, always looking to the horizon. Hopefully I also become a better person in the process.

Selling art is just one thing. Enjoying the relationships with people created from those sales may actually be the best part.

I had painted this right before leaving for the Crested Butte show and it was among the first ones sold last weekend. It actually was one of my latest favs and I guess they liked it as well!
These new pieces have some pencil lines scratched in which creates some spontaneous but subtle interest. They are like an architect's rough drawings overlaid with texture and paint.

From The Cool Mountains To 107 Degrees!

It's back to the real world after doing the Crested Butte Festival and relaxing in the high mountain air of Colorado. We arrived back in OK Tuesday to 107 temps and humidity. Talk about a slap in the face!

The show was a success. Fourteen paintings were sold and I met so many great art patrons as well as new artist friends. Crested Butte is just the coolest little mountain town full of diverse characters, super food, and panoramic views. I will make this one a stop again for sure.

This new piece is sort of a return to a semi-geometric style I was creating last year. It has some of the structure, but with the loose palette knife elements in my current work and the texture, of course. There are also some subtle lines and such scatched in with a Pablo Caran d'Ache pencil.

I am painting and working to a frenzy to prepare for the "big show" in the mountains July 31- August 1. Besides making sure I have a large variety of work to display, there is the "list". The long laundry list of what to pack... or not pack for a weekend outdoor arts festival. I'm sure I will forget something. I always do.

All went well with my wife's surgery last week and after a week of recovery, she actually returned to work today! Whew! What a relief.

I'm now rested up mentally and also fired up to paint again. It will be a busy few weeks creating new works, prepping the display and tent, and getting ready to travel to Crested Butte, CO for the arts festival July 31- Aug 1. We will look forward to the high mountain getaway after a stressful couple of months.

Here is the latest small canvas completed. I used a little softer palette on this one and it feels peaceful to me, thus the title. "Pacifico" (It.)

Life. It can be wonderful, hectic, and full of surprises.

I wanted to just stop and post this great pic by a photographer friend of mine from Malibu, CA to remind you to slow down and...you know... smell the flowers.

My wonderful wife has been having some health issues and is facing a surgery later this week. It's really hard to focus on work, art or anything really until we know all is well. It puts things in perspective and makes us realize that we need to enjoy life with gusto. Stop sweating the little stuff, because it just doesn't matter...really.

Cherish those you love today and smell a flower or two....or dozen.

A Hot Day at Clinton, OK Art in the Park

Here is a pic of a HOT and windblown, but overall happy artist at the Clinton, OK Art in the Park this past Saturday. Next to me is my Honorable Mention award which, along with sales of art (always a plus!), made the hard work and 100 degree temps a little more bearable.

Clinton's show is always under a covered pavillion, so that helps a lot. It is also a one day show. I want to thank my art patons and the show staff for their help and hard work.

Life has been somewhat stressful lately, so I have been trying to escape late in the evenings with my art. Self-imposed art therapy. As this painting took form, I imagined traveling through a different time and space, escaping if only for a brief period of time.

The funny thing is...the painting actually fought me in the first stages. I went to bed that night a little frustrated with it. The next evening I started repainting areas, blending and softening until it started to feel more soothing. I guess the night of rest took me to a place that I could envision in the next painting session.

Ahhhh...I feel much better.

I have been experimenting with mixed media again. I really like putting things together and creating textures along with the paint, so here is my latest...called "Ripreso" which means "reclaimed" in Italian. I used 8x8'' canvas mounted to a reclaimed wood panel and applied papers, corrugated cardboard, bamboo sticks, and sandpapers. I didn't count the layers of red glazes, but these are rich under good lighting. Each canvas is 8''x8''.

I am a little behind in posting, but here is a large piece I finished a few days ago. Things are getting pretty busy, both in art opportunities and other life matters. I have a new gallery to paint for as well as some summer and fall fetsivals, so paint is flying every chance I get!

With this painting and some other recent ones, I have gone with a more atmospheric approach while keeping the rough palette knife elements which have become my trademark. I like the warmth of the piece with the dabs of turquoise. The name is Italian for "golden".

Today I am posting a couple of square paintings in progress. One is a 12''x12'' and the other 14''x14''. I worked on the 12'' one last night until about midnight after this picture was taken and it is pretty close to finished. I added more glazing, some turquoise and some warm grey tones with white areas popping through. I'll try to get it photographed and named (the hardest part) so I can post it tomorrow.

There are so many places on the internet today to get your art in front of the public that all of this gets a little overwhelming to keep up with. I am now posting new works to my main website, three painting blogs (including this one), my Facebook fan page, and a couple of other FB art pages. It's the digital age and it has become part of the artist's business duties to be visible in a world full of visual stimulation. I will forge on. Hopefully, I will find time to create some art!

Between Paintings - Studio News

Today I wanted to post up something here to keep the blog flowing and since I'm in between paintings right now, I don't have new art to show you. I will be painting several over the next few weeks, so check in often.

I'm now set up on Etsy with an online shop to sell my small paintings. This opens up a whole new market and an easy way to purchase my work via PayPal. Check out my store at MarkYearwoodArt.etsy.com

The March issue of American Art Collector is out and again, one of my small paintings appears in a joint ad with Daily Painters Abstract Gallery. AAC is a premier publication reaching art collectors around the globe and these spots have generated interest in my work.

I have applied to a few regional art festivals in Kansas and Colorado this summer, so I will wait and see if I get juried in to some of these. There are some other events coming up soon that I will painting for including the Denison Texas Art Walk, March 27-28, The Paseo Arts Festival, Oklahoma City, May 29,30,31 and the Clinton, OK Art Show June 5.

The finished painting from the progress pic in the last post. I'm working towards an atmospheric quality in my latest paintings by creating more negative space against the stuctured layers. I like the way this one is busy, but serene at the same time.

The texture is heavier than some of my others and looks much better up close.

I also ended up flipping it 180 degrees in the end although, it looks really good any way you hang it. This one will have a new home in California.

In the Studio- A Canvas in Progress

I thought I would share this painting in progress started yesterday. This is the "cover the canvas and rough it in stage", although it is already feeling pretty good. Man, I love to paint!
